Where to look for money owed to you in the US: each state's official unclaimed property search (all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico), MissingMoney.com, and federal sources for old tax refunds, lost 401(k)s and pensions, savings bonds, failed banks and credit unions, failed brokerages (SIPC), life insurance of someone who died (NAIC Policy Locator), the Social Security lump-sum death payment, Individual Indian Money accounts, and FTC, SEC, CFPB and HUD refunds. Takes several states at once (every state the user lived or worked in) and gives a claim checklist, including for heirs.
